GreenThumb Rules of Thumb

Blog

Here at GreenThumb, we love creating lawns we know our customers love. That’s why we offer the best treatments, materials and leading advice on everything lawn related. However, to help your lawn get the best results, we need your help too!

You’ve had the same GreenThumb lawn treatment as your neighbour, and the outdoor conditions are almost identical, then why does your neighbour have a better lawn? The answer? They most likely go the extra mile to look after their lawn!

Simply put, the best lawns are achieved by the means of a partnership between GreenThumb and our customers. We provide the essential treatments and expert advice, but we need our customers to take care of their lawn when we’re not there.

To get the best from GreenThumb treatments, follow these 3 fundamental Rules of Thumb.

1.    Mow regularly
Don’t let your lawn grow too long before you next mow. The more frequent a lawn is mown, the better it will look. Take notice of the outdoor environment throughout the seasons to decide how frequently your lawn needs mowing. For example:

•    Consider cutting your lawn once a week in the Autumn and Summer. In Autumn, your lawn needs to harvest as much sunlight as possible to give the plants enough energy for the winter.
•    A warm, wet Spring or an early Summer means your lawn might need mowing more than once a week.
•    A dry, warm winter might mean your lawn could benefit from a monthly trim.
•    If the lawn is left too long before its first cut in the year, this can mean a poor looking lawn for March and April.

2.    Don’t mow too short
Cutting your lawn too short will damage the plant  – this could lead to lawn disease and grub infestation.
•    We recommend never cutting your lawn less than 1 inch (25mm) unless it’s late Autumn when it’s best to cut your lawn to about 1.5 inches (40mm).
•    During dry weather, increase the height of the cut to 2 inches (50mm). This keeps the grass cool and stops it from drying out too quickly.
•    If your lawn has grown too long, cut it back in stages rather than all at once.
•    If your lawn has been ‘scalped’, mowing your lawn as often as you can, will give it the best chance of recovery. However, it would be best to increase the height of the cut.

3.    Water during dry weather
Watering during the dry season is vital to achieving a healthy, green lawn. If left neglected, your lawn could suffer from stress and turn brown; to top it off, your grass will die whilst those pesky weeds thrive! We don’t want that! By regularly watering your lawn, you’ll save yourself time, money, and energy by avoiding bare batches and additional treatments.

•    Water to the depth of 25-50mm. Anything less will mean the lawn dries out quickly; anything more will simply waste any water
•    Water in the morning when the moisture is likely to soak in rather than evaporate
•    Water for 20 minutes at a time, avoiding any ‘pooling’ on your lawn
•    For most efficient watering, use a sprinkler and time
•    Our Oasis treatment will help to reduce pooling, especially on dry patches. Oasis also complements your regular watering regime, keeping your grass hydrated and healthy, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less
