How to prepare for Top Dressing?

Before Top Dressing your lawn, dedicate some time to cut out any weeds with a shovel as this will reduce the growth of weeds as well as give your lawn a more even look. It is also important to mow your lawn to about an inch high as this will ensure the Top Dressing will easily rake through the grass as you want the nutrients to easily absorb into the soil. It is also worth aerating your lawn which is the process of making holes in the soil, allowing water, oxygen, and other nutrients access to the root zone. How to prepare for Overseeding?

Ideally, when sowing, the new weed requires warmth, moisture, and sufficient soil contact; the ground temperature needs to be above 5c. It is also recommended to water the areas that need reseeding (if there hasn’t been sufficient rainfall) to help keep the seeds moist. On the question of what should be planted first, the Top Dressing or the Overseeding, the Overseeding should go second as the increased exposure to the sun will help the seeds germinate. Another way to help the seeds germinate is through mowing at a higher setting so that the grass has the chance to grow (when it’s reached the two-leaf stage) then you can cut it down to your preferred height.
